Applying for a place at MFAZ

We accept applications for enrolment each year. The new students start their course in January.

However, before considering applying, please understand that this college stands for the highest standards of excellence, and that to this end we apply strict standards of workmanship and discipline. This means that students are expected to follow college rules and guidelines to the letter, and that misdemeanours are rigorously dealt with. Therefore only those people with a real desire to study motor vehicle mechanics, and with the commitment to put in the hours of hard work should apply.

Ideally applicants should have passed Grade 12 schooling. However this is more a practical course than an academic one (although theory is not neglected), and we understand that sometimes students have not been able to get their school certificates. Therefore we will consider applications from Grade 9. The most important aspects are that students must be able to read, write and understand English to a high level, and must have basic school Maths and Science.

Application Forms.

If you wish to apply for acceptance at MFAZ as a student, you will first need to fill out an application form. These are obtainable from us from the beginning of July each year, currently at ZMK 2,000. Local applicants should come to the college in person during office hours, Monday to Friday. We will consider e-mailing the forms to applicants from afar upon receipt of the K2,000.

The form should be filled in and returned to us by the date given, along with supporting documents including your school results, a letter of recommendation from your headmaster, employer, Pastor or similar person, a recent photo etc. All these are clearly explained on the form.

Upon receipt of the completed Application Form, you will be informed of the date, usually in October, for you to come to the college for the selection procedure itself. This consists of a short test which is designed to enable us to assess your grasp of the English language (reading, writing and understanding), and of basic maths and science. If you pass this test, you will go on for interview which will be conducted the next day. The results are given by the end of that week.

If you are accepted you will need to take a medical examination.

It should be emphasised that we normally receive approximately ten times the number of applications as we have places. Therefore we regard the application process as part of the process of making selection. If the clearly explained instructions are not carefully followed, your application will be automatically rejected.

Fees.

MFAZ is a charity, and the course is highly subsidised. This means that students pay only a very small contribution towards the cost of their course, and the charity pays the large remainder. However we do not give the education for free! All students are expected to pay their contribution, and by the due date, or penalties are applied. It is a two year course, each year consisting of three terms.

The fees currently are:

Termly fees: K300,000.00 payable at the beginning of each term, plus

Contribution towards C&G exam fees: K100,000.00 per exam, payable by the end of September each year. There are two exams at the end of the first year, and four at the end of the second year.

During your entire two years at MFAZ, your practical abilities and progress are continuously assessed. If at the end of the course you are deemed to be competent in all areas as defined by City & Guilds, there is a fee for Practical Competence Certification of, currently, K270,000.00

Thus, successful completion of the course currently costs a total of K2,670,000.00

Exam fees will not be accepted until term fees are up to date, and students will not be entered for the exams unless their exam fees are paid by the due date.

These are ALL of the fees charged at this college, and there are no hidden extras (provided payment deadlines are met).

All prices given in ZMK, and are subject to change without notification. Please check with us at the time of application for current prices.

Accommodation.

MFAZ is a day college, and no accommodation is offered. However we may be able to assist students to find rooms to rent nearby. Please note though, that, as a charity, we give a basic but nutritous lunch to all students Mondays to Thursdays during term time at no extra cost!
